  • 3 tablespoons chopped onion
  • ½ teaspoon minced Serrano chile, or more, to taste
  • 1½ teaspoons finely chopped cilantro leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 small vine-ripened tomato
  • 1 ripe Hass avocado
  • Tortilla chips for serving

Instructions

  1. In a medium-sized bowl or a Mexican molcajete, thoroughly mash 1 tablespoon of the chopped onion with the minced Serrano chile, ½ teaspoon of chopped cilantro, and ½ teaspoon of salt to create a flavorful paste.
  2. Cut the tomato in half horizontally, squeeze out the juice and seeds, and discard. Chop the remaining pulp and add it to the bowl with the paste.
  3. Halve the avocado lengthwise, twist to separate, and remove the pit. Slice the flesh of both avocado halves lengthwise and then crosswise to create a grid pattern. Scoop the diced avocado into the bowl using a spoon.
  4. Add the remaining chopped onion and cilantro to the mixture. Gently fold all the ingredients together, taking care not to over-mash the avocado. Season with additional minced chile and salt to taste.
  5. Serve immediately with tortilla chips for dipping.
