Ingredients
- 8 ounces of elbow macaroni
- 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter
- ¼ cup of all-purpose flour
- 2 cups of whole milk
- 2 cups of shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 cup of breadcrumbs for topping
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a separate large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, sprinkle in the flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes to create a roux.
- Slowly whisk in the milk, ensuring no lumps remain. Continue to cook, stirring often, until the mixture thickens and starts to bubble, about 5-7 minutes.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, and salt until smooth and creamy.
- Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce, mixing well to ensure all pasta is coated with the cheese mixture.
- Transfer the mac and cheese to a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
- In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs with melted butter and sprinkle evenly over the top of the mac and cheese.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
- Remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your homestyle mac and cheese!
